Vortex Technology Improves Custody Transfer of Saturated SteamA major manufacturer was looking to optimize plant productivity. Each department operates as an independent profit or loss center. Steam was used for each department for process heat and house heat. Steam production at the power house is carefully measured and totalized and the departments are billed accordingly.CHALLENGEAccurate measurement of steam use is important, since each department wants to minimize energy costs. The manufacturer was using mechanical flowmeters that didn’t provide totalized steam flow on demand and required frequent maintenance.SOLUTIONThe customer replaced their old mechanical meters with Pro-V™ multivariable vortex flowmeters on the steam line for the house heat. The vortex flowmeter provided a cost-effective, reliable, low maintenance solution; with its rugged all welded design utilizing no moving parts. The old meter remained in service during the transition to the Pro-V™ multivariable vortex flowmeter. In comparison to the readings of the vortex flowmeter, the customer discovered that the old meter was off 3-5% due to steam density changes. The Pro-V™ multivariable flowmeter was able to provide significantly higher accuracy in steam flow measurement, since it has an integrated temperature and pressure sensor which compensates for these changes in steam applications, with an output of pressure, temperature, and compensated mass flow. The customer was also able to reduce their tax burden, since house heat is taxed differently than process steam. The Pro-V™ multivariable vortex flowmeter significantly improved accounting for the steam usage and lowered their maintenance costs.BENEFITSReduced maintenance costsDelivered higher accuracy (3-5% reduction in error of custody transfer of steam)Reduced tax burden

Vortex Flowmeter Technology Improves Process Reliability at Electric Co-Generation PlantA co-generation plant was spending countless dollars and man hours repairing failing averaging pitot tube devices that they were using to monitor steam. They wanted to optimize performance and decrease maintenance costs. In addition to operating a 500 MW electric co-generating station for the city, the co-generation plant also provides steam service to a local manufacturing facility (steam host) in an effort to generate revenue for the co-generation facility. Providing accurate and reliable steam flow measurement was crucial.CHALLENGEThe plant had traditionally used averaging pitot tube flowmeters and was not happy with their limitations and maintenance issues. The averaging pitot tube flowmeters were not suitable for wide rangeability measurements and could not measure the low end of the steam flow rate range.Averaging pitot tube flowmeters require impulse lines which transmit process pressure to the DP transmitter. These impulse lines added potential leak points and were vulnerable to blockages from debris settling into them from the process fluid, resulting in inaccurate or incorrect flow measurement. Additionally, in order to calculate mass flow a separate temperature and pressure transmitter was also required and a second pipe penetration was needed to install the temperature sensor.SOLUTIONThe co-generation plant replaced their old averaging pitot tube flowmeters with Pro-V™ multivariable vortex flowmeters because they provide a wider turndown, which allowed them to accurately measure the low end of the steam flow rate range. Maintenance and installation costs were reduced by eliminating impulse lines and by the fact that the Pro-V™ multivariable vortex flowmeters offer integral temperature and pressure sensors giving them mass flow measurement through a single pipe penetration.The Pro-V™ multivariable flowmeters were a cost-effective, reliable, low maintenance solution which improved operations and measurement accuracy.BENEFITSHigher accuracy through improved measurment reliabilityCost-effective olutionLong Term Maintenance Free Operation

Reducing Production and Operating CostsA separator company working with a major oil and gas producer was looking to optimize plant productivity and improve process safety. Their flowmeters where experiencing accuracy problems and erratic readings. Maintenance was costly.CHALLENGEA huge challenge for oil and gas producers is the rising cost of production and operating expenses associated with increased activity in the upstream segment. Rising inflation costs within the industry, as well as its utilization of antiquated technology also contributed to the rising costs.The oil and gas producers wells flow into either a test or production separator that separate gas from liquids. Turbine meters have traditionally been used to measure both the gas and liquid segments from the separator. Due to liquid carry over and debris in the flow line, the separators mechanical meters required extensive maintenance to replace and clean rotating blades. When these meters failed on production and test separators, the flow rates couldn`t be measured and had to be inferred. This affected the accuracy of daily volumes. As a result, daily volumes remained unspecified until the next time the separator was placed on the well test schedule. This breakdown was very costly, especially when the well experienced high water or low oil production and well intervention was required.In order to replace or clean internal parts, the mechanical meters had to be removed from the line. Not only was this costly and time consuming, but it was also unsafe. Maintenance personnel would spend time near open production lines, resulting in increased safety, health, and environmental risks.SOLUTIONThe customer replaced their old mechanical meters with Pro-V™ M22 vortex flowmeters. The vortex flowmeter provided a cost-effective, reliable, low maintenance solution, with its rugged design. Utilizing no moving parts, no routine maintenance or cleaning is required. There are no blades that can get worn or bent. This saved the producer maintenance costs and reduced the time personnel had to be near open production lines, reducing safety, health, and environmental concerns. The producer improved field operations, eliminated downtime, increased measurement reliability, enhanced process safety, lowered maintenance costs, and improved their ability to assess if a well is producing.BENEFITSReduced field production and operating costsHigher accuracy improved measurement reliabilityLong term maintenance free operationReduced safety, health, and environmental concerns

Vortex Flowmeter Technology Used for Absorption Chiller Upgrade at Major UniversitiesA major University monitors chilled water coming in and out of the chiller plant to determine if there is a loss of water in the system outside the plant. Total BTUs are calculated for each chilled water loop to each campus building. The chilled water is metered after passing through the chiller and is used along with the steam and condenser water flow to balance each chiller. The chiller is balanced to ensure that during operation each chiller operates at optimal operating conditions for maximum cooling of the chilled water and at maximum energy efficiency. Operating the chillers at their optimal operating levels increases the overall efficiency of the chiller, reduces energy and maintenance costs and increases the life of the chiller.CHALLENGEThe University was using insertion turbine flowmeters for this application. These flowmeters were chosen primarily because of their low cost. The turbine flowmeters were experiencing accuracy problems and erratic outputs. Maintenance was costly.SOLUTIONThe university replaced their turbine flowmeters with Pro-V™ Model 23-EM insertion vortex flowmeters. The main reason the University selected the Pro-V™ Model 23-EM was the flowmeters ability to calculate energy consumption in BTUs directly with its integrated temperature and pressure sensors. Installing the flowmeter through a single pipe penetration simplified the systems complexity and helped reduce initial equipment costs, installation costs and maintenance costs. Another advantage was that the flowmeters are wet calibrated and offer a high degree of accuracy. That combined with the lower maintenance costs associated with its no moving parts design made it the ideal solution. System reliability is up and maintenance costs are down.BENEFITSBTU measurement capabilityHot tap solutionCost effective solutionLong term maintenance free operation
